About Zimmer NexGen High Flex Knee

More than 150,000 Zimmer NexGen CR and Zimmer NexGen CR-Flex Porous Femoral implants have been sold since 2003. The Zimmer NexGen knee replacement system has been linked to a number of problems, including reports of pain, loosening of the implant and failure of the replacement knee leading to revision surgery.

There are several different types of joints used in knee replacement surgeries. These designs vary in how they function as well as how the joint is attached.

One type of joint used in these surgeries is the NexGen® joint manufactured by Zimmer Holdings, Inc. (Zimmer). This particular joint is "high flex" joint that attaches to the thigh bone. Unlike most joints which use a cement to attach, the NexGen® fuses directly to the bone. This replacement joint may have a design defect which causes patients unnecessary pain.

Patients who received the NexGen® joints may experience joint failure at a higher rate than other joint types. This high failure rate prompted a prominent group of surgeons to call for the recall of NexGen® joints during the March 2010 meeting of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Citing recent research, the doctors argued that36% of patients who received the NexGen® joint experienced pain in their joint. Further, 9% of patients who received the NexGen® joint had to undergo a second surgery after experiencing pain associated with the loosening of the joint. Researchers believe that the lack of cement used to attach the joint may contribute to the high failure rate.

Currently, Zimmer has not issued a recall for the NexGen® joint or changed how it is attaches. As further research is conducted, patients who have received this type of joint need to be aware of potential complications they may face as well as their legal rights.
