Cass Community Social Services has named Dan Swanson of Sommers Schwartz to its 2010 Board of Directors.

Mr. Swanson is a senior shareholder and Chairman of Sommers Schwartz Board of Directors and is on both the Super Lawyer and Best Lawyer lists for the area's top attorneys. His work in employment law, discrimination and sexual harassment litigation wins multi million dollar awards annually.

CCSS is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) community-based organization headquartered in Detroit serving Southeastern Michigan and Wayne County, under the direction of a volunteer Board of Directors. The charitable organization is dedicated to making a profound difference in the diverse populations it serves by providing for basic needs, including affordable housing, promoting self reliance and encouraging community inclusion and improvement."

Cass is one of a number of organizations focused on fighting poverty in Detroit, a city in crisis. Community groups estimate that Detroit has about 18,000 homeless people.

Destitution and despair are not new to Detroit but with unemployment reaching an all-time high last year of 29 percent organizations like CCSS becoming increasingly vital to saving the city's infrastructure of human capital.

CCSS has 100 employees, utilizes 5,000 volunteers annually and has an operating budget of 6 million dollars. Cass Community became accredited in 1998 and again in 2001, 2004 and 2007 by the Commission of Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (now known simply as CARF). The 2007 accreditation was without a single recommendation (only three percent of the accredited organizations receive this distinction).
