  • Confidential Settlement in Case Alleging Medication Error During Surgery

Sommers Schwartz attorney Matthew Turner secured a confidential settlement for a 64-year-old woman who suffered cardiac arrest during surgery as a result of a medication error.

From an early age, the plaintiff suffered from facial paralysis due to polio with Bell’s palsy and later underwent surgery to correct the deformity. During the procedure, she received an injection of epinephrine that was mislabeled and immediately went into cardiac arrest. The plaintiff was successfully revived and transported to ICU, where she was intubated and sedated.

Due to oxygen deprivation, the plaintiff sustained serious brain injury with memory loss as well as acute kidney failure. Although doctors told her that her memory would likely improve over time, she continues to suffer amnesic episodes more than two years after the cardiac episode.
