  • $600,000 Settlement in Case Involving Negligently Performed Epidural Steroid Injections

Sommers Schwartz attorney Robert Sickels secured a $600,000 paralysis injury settlement for a woman who sought treatment for pain management. The defendant physician diagnosed the plaintiff with sacroiliac joint dysfunction and ischial bursitis, and performed a series of epidural steroid injections. During the final set of injections, the plaintiff experienced severe pain and burning in her feet that proceeded to radiate up her legs and into her abdomen and lower back. When the doctor sat her up, she had no control over her lower body and experienced difficulty breathing. She was then taken to a hospital where she was diagnosed with acute lower extremity paralysis and loss of sensation. The medical malpractice lawsuit alleged that the defendant negligently performed the transforaminal epidural procedures, resulting in an injection into the plaintiff’s spinal artery that caused a cord infarction and nerve damage. In addition to lower extremity paralysis, she developed incontinence of bowel and bladder. The plaintiff subsequently endured lengthy hospital admissions and rehabilitations and months of therapy.
