According to lab reports, Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic may be duping consumers who purchase their cooling aloe gels into thinking the products contain aloe vera when, in fact, they do not.
Acemannan, malic acid, and glucose are substances that indicate the presence of aloe vera. Research conducted by an independent lab on Hawaiian Tropic After Sun Cooling Aloe Gel and Banana Boat Soothing Aloe After Sun Gel showed the three components were absent or at levels outside of detection by a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer.
The International Aloe Science Council (IASC) is a non-profit organization that represents aloe growers, processors, manufacturers, testing laboratories, physicians, scientists, and researchers around the world. Standards established by the IASC mandate that only those products with acemannan can be labeled as containing aloe vera. Because the Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic gels fail to include that ingredient, the companies face allegations that they are engaging in false advertising and deceptive sales practices.
Banana Boat and Hawaiian Tropic aren’t the only companies misrepresenting the presence of aloe in aloe vera products. A number of other manufacturers and retailers are facing similar scrutiny, including:
- CVS Aftersun Aloe Vera Moisturizing Gel
- Dollar General Soothing Aloe Gel
- Family Dollar Tropic Sun Aloe Vera Gel
- Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera 100% Gel
- GNC Aloe Vera Skin Gel
- Target Up & Up™ Aloe Vera Gel
- Trader Joe’s Aloe Vera Gel
- Walgreens Alcohol Free Aloe Vera Body Gel
- Walmart Equate Soothing Aloe After Sun Gel
These brands are in contrast with other products on the market that have been subjected to laboratory testing and do, in fact, contain detectable levels of acemannan or other indicators of aloe vera.
