Surgical Malpractice – Rectal Tear: Shoneye v. William Beaumont Health System, et al.
Sommers Schwartz attorney Kenneth Watkins filed a medical malpractice lawsuit on behalf of a 37-year-old woman who was the victim of a surgical error during a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy. According to the complaint, the defendant surgeon negligently injured the patient’s rectum during the procedure, but it was not discovered until three days later. In the interim, she experienced unnecessary abdominal pain, bloating, and bloody diarrhea, and later underwent additional surgery to repair the rectal injury, followed by prolonged hospitalization. weeks. In the two years since then, the patient has suffered ongoing gastrointestinal problems. She is now seeking damages from the surgeon and the hospital where the initial surgery was performed, and her husband is claiming loss of consortium. The suit is now pending in Oakland County, Michigan Circuit Court.
