Video Transcript: Whistleblower Definition
A whistleblower is an employee who has observed behavior by their employer on the job which they in good faith believe is a violation of a state or federal law. A person may observe a supervisor dumping what they know to be poison in a river or a lake while on the job. That employee then goes to a state or federal agency, such as the EPA or the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and reports the activity. Unfortunately, if the employer then chooses to retaliate against that employee for having made the report, that person is a whistleblower who may be entitled to protection under the Michigan Whistleblower Protection Act.
