Sommers Schwartz Secures Cy Pres Award for United Policyholders
As a result of an insurance class action victory secured by the firm, Sommers Schwartz recently directed a cy pres award to United Policyholders (UP). This is a non-profit 501(c) (3) organization that serves as an information resource and advocate for U.S. consumers who hold all types of insurance policies.
When class action lawyers win a case, but have difficulty locating class members to receive their shares of the settlement, courts will often grant a cy pres award. The settlement money that would have been awarded to the class member(s) is instead given to a non-profit group that advances the same interests vindicated in the lawsuit.
UP mentioned the cy pres award from Sommers Schwartz in a recent newsletter, and expressed the organization’s thanks to our firm in facilitating the donation.
