Experienced Medical Malpractice Paralegal
Sommers Schwartz is seeking an experienced paralegal to work on our medical malpractice litigation team in the firm’s Southfield, Michigan office.
In this regular, full-time, non-exempt position, the paralegal will support our attorneys in their representation of clients at every stage of medical malpractice and personal injury litigation, including pre-suit investigations, discovery, pre-trial proceedings, trials, and appeals.
Job responsibilities include:
- Collecting pertinent information from prospective clients during phone interviews.
- Entering information into the firm’s matter intake software and contact databases.
- Working with attorneys and professional staff to evaluate legal claims, request and review medical records, and communicate with prospective clients throughout the intake process.
- Investigating the facts surrounding the medical care and treatment rendered in medical malpractice cases, including birth injury claims.
- Preparing legal documents, including pleadings, motions, briefs, affidavits, notices of intent, discovery requests, case evaluation summaries, and demand letters.
- Researching the law and medicine associated with each case.
- Organizing and maintaining documents in paper and our electronic filing system.
- Inputting updates into our case management system.
- Analyzing and summarizing medical records, deposition transcripts, answers to interrogatories, and other material.
- Meeting with clients and other professionals to discuss details of the case.
- Communicating with clients and their families.
- Working with attorneys, other paralegals, and professional staff.
- Interviewing medical experts and witnesses.
- Attending federal and state court proceedings with attorneys.
- Preparing for trial by organizing exhibits and performing other tasks.
- Participating in firm activities, meetings, and events.
- Assist with other external marketing and administrative duties as needed.
Candidates should possess the required experience and skills:
- Paralegal or legal assistant certification from an accredited program.
- Two or more years of experience working on medical malpractice cases in a law firm setting. Birth injury case experience is a plus.
- Superior writing skills and competency in legal and medical literature research.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to empathize with emotional and distraught individuals seeking legal assistance.
- Familiarity with medical terminology, notations, and records; anatomical drawings; laboratory tests; and medications; and the ability to explain or illustrate diagnoses of medical conditions.
- Solid organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced litigation environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook, and Excel; knowledge of Needles CMS, LawRuler, or similar intake and practice management software programs is preferred.
- Ability to work remotely or at home, if requested.

Accountant/Bookkeeper
Sommers Schwartz seeks an experienced Accountant/Bookkeeper to work closely with our CFO and staff.
In this regular, full-time, non-exempt position, the individual must have the requisite experience to perform accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and accounting functions according to established procedures or as directed by our Chief Financial Officer. Among the specific duties are: researching and processing Accounts Payable invoices and payments; preparing daily cash deposits and filling out daily cash control reporting; researching and processing charge-backs, bad checks, etc.; reconciling bank statements and general ledger accounts; and entering recommended journal entries for posting.
Job responsibilities include:
- Collaborating with legal staff and other teams to provide administrative support.
- Preparing spreadsheets and general word processing.
- Researching and processing Accounts Payable invoices and payments; preparing daily cash deposits and filling out daily cash control reporting
- Developing and testing documents for accuracy and completeness.
- Preparing copies, scans, faxes, and other correspondence.
- Maintaining accounting and other records.
- Testing and preparing expense reimbursements and arranging for payment of invoices as necessary.
- Reconciling bank statements and general ledger accounts.
Candidates should possess the required experience and skills:
- Attention to detail and ability to organize and handle multiple activities – REQUIRED.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, perform detailed work with numerical data, and make arithmetic computations rapidly and easily – REQUIRED.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with accounting software is essential, and candidates MUST be well versed in Microsoft Office Suite applications with solid skills in Excel and Word.
- Juris software experience would be a plus.
- Ability to interact professionally with clients and staff on the telephone and in person.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of firm employees.
- Proactive, positive, energetic, and hard-working team player.
- An understanding of the importance of confidentiality.
Education/Background
At a minimum, we require an Associate’s degree in Accounting; Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Two years of experience in Accounts Payable, Receivables, and Bank reconciliations is desirable.

Intake Specialist
Sommers Schwartz is seeking an experienced intake specialist for the firm’s personal injury and medical malpractice litigation team.
In this full-time, non-exempt position, the intake specialist serves as the first point of contact with potential clients to gather critical information needed to assess the legal basis, cause, and scope of their injuries and medical conditions by conducting detailed interviews, requesting and collecting medical records and other documents, sending client letters, tracking and organizing intake data, reporting intake data, and communicating with the firm’s attorneys and clients.
Job responsibilities include:
- Answering and screening phone calls and written inquiries from prospective clients generated from firm websites, advertisements, and/or inbound cold calls (“leads”).
- Collecting pertinent information from prospective clients during phone interviews and requesting and collecting relevant documents and medical records.
- Entering information into the firm’s matter intake software and contact databases.
- Drafting and sending form retainer agreements to leads for signature as directed by attorneys.
- Calling leads and following up as necessary to collect signed retainer agreements and/or other requested documents.
- Sending firm turn-back letters to non-responsive leads and/or as otherwise directed.
- Working with attorneys and professional staff to assist with the evaluation of legal claims, requesting medical records, and communicating with prospective clients throughout the intake process.
- Attending regular meetings with firm attorneys and staff.
- Assisting with other marketing and administrative duties as needed.
Candidates should possess the required experience and skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Additional relevant education will be viewed favorably.
- Excellent people skills and ability to problem solve and think quickly under stress.
- Prior telephone intake or customer service experience is mandatory, including demonstrated success in a phone-based, client-facing role.
- Prior legal experience preferred.
- Familiarity with medical terminology preferred.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to empathize with emotional and distraught individuals seeking legal assistance.
- Superior organizational skills and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced litigation environment.
- Solid data entry and keyboarding skills and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Outlook and Excel (knowledge of Needles CMS and LawRuler/Lexicata or similar intake software programs is preferred).
- This is an office-based position, with the possibility of up to two remote workdays per week.
