Sommers Schwartz attorneys Matthew Turner and Lenore Zakhem secured a $750,000 wrongful deathsettlement for the estate of a woman who died after doctors failed to timely recognize and treat a severe infection.

The decedent presented to the defendant hospital’s emergency room with symptoms and abnormal vital signs indicative of a severe infection and met the criteria for sepsis. Notwithstanding that the decedent was experiencing life-threatening symptoms, the physicians and nurses breached their duty of care in several respects that unreasonably delayed treatment that likely would have saved her life.

Specifically, the defendants failed to recognize that she suffered from an infection based on physical examination findings and lab results, ignored the sepsis screening, and failed to immediately order blood cultures and start broad-spectrum antibiotics.

Had the defendants initiated antibiotics promptly, the patient would have survived with minimal to no disabilities or deficits.
