$1.5 Million Settlement Over Surgical Errors Resulting in Massive Blood Loss and Amputation of the Foot

$1.5 Million

Sommers Schwartz attorney Kenneth Watkins secured a confidential $1.5 million settlement on behalf of a woman who was severely harmed as a result of surgical errors. The plaintiff underwent a hysterectomy procedure following a diagnosis of endometrial cancer. During the operation, injury was done to the patient’s iliac veins, causing a 20-liter blood loss. The extensive hemorrhage brought on myocardial infarction, acute respiratory failure, acute renal failure, shock liver, and fluid overload, which necessitated subsequent surgeries for ureter obstruction and abdominal wound closure. Two weeks after the initial procedure, the patient showed signs of mental status changes due to encephalopathy and was re-intubated for shortness of breath and treated for suspected aspiration pneumonia, urosepsis, acute renal failure, and possible septic shock. Over the next several months, she experienced infection, bacteremia, and gangrene in her right foot, which was ultimately amputated. The 74-year-old widowed plaintiff sought damages for the pain and suffering, permanent disfigurement, and economic loss caused by the defendants’ various acts of medical malpractice.
