In this medical malpractice action, Sommers Schwartz attorneys Matthew Turner and John Malone obtained a $3,000,000 settlement on behalf of a woman who suffered a stroke after a hospital administered contraindicated medications.

According to her complaint, the plaintiff went to a hospital emergency room complaining of uterine bleeding. The ER staff administered Premarin to control her bleeding and admitted her for observation. Less than seventeen hours after discontinuing Premarin, the same hospital’s doctors prescribed, approved, and administered tranexamic acid (TXA). Administering TXA less than twenty-four hours after discontinuing Premarin is contraindicated.

The hospital’s computer system failed to alert the doctors or pharmacists that the combination of drugs was potentially dangerous. The patient’s doctors and pharmacist failed to recognize the potentially harmful combination of medications. As a result of receiving these contraindicated medications, the patient suffered a debilitating stroke. Despite weeks of hospitalization and extensive therapy, the plaintiff has permanent motor and sensory deficits that significantly impair her quality of life and impede her ability to perform daily activities. The lawsuit asserted that the defendant doctors were negligent in prescribing contraindicated medications, while the pharmacists and hospital negligently allowed the administration of these drugs together.
