What happens when you combine a passion for medicine, a love of the law, and an insatiable curiosity? You get someone like Kim Graham. Kim is a nurse consultant with Sommers Schwartz, playing a vital role behind the scenes by reviewing medical records, uncovering key insights, and assisting our attorneys in building stronger cases. In this spotlight, we learn more about Kim’s unique journey and why she’s such an indispensable part of our team.

What are your responsibilities in your current role at Sommers Schwartz?

As a nurse consultant, my primary responsibility is reviewing incoming cases during their investigative stage. When a potential medical malpractice claim is brought to us, I examine the medical records to determine if the claim appears to have merit. I summarize the records, research potential issues, and prepare written reports for expert review. I also assist attorneys with case preparation, such as research for upcoming depositions or trials. Since we rotate assignments among about a dozen attorneys, I work with everyone across the firm.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love to learn, and this job constantly exposes me to new medical conditions, procedures, and legal issues. Every case presents something different, which satisfies my curiosity and passion for learning. Another thing I truly enjoy is how this role allows me to combine my two professional paths: nursing and law. I began my career as a paralegal, later became a nurse, and now I get to bring both worlds together. It’s incredibly rewarding.

Did you work anywhere before joining Sommers Schwartz? If so, how has that experience helped you here?

Yes, I initially worked as a med-mal paralegal and even spent time at Sommers Schwartz in that role before pursuing my nursing degree. After gaining clinical experience as a nurse, I returned to Sommers Schwartz, where I combined my legal and medical knowledge. Having real-world clinical experience helps me understand how hospitals and acute care settings function in practice, which is critical when reviewing cases. I also stay connected to the clinical side by serving as adjunct faculty at the University of Detroit Mercy, where I teach nursing students in clinical settings.

What is your proudest accomplishment at Sommers Schwartz?

It’s hard to choose just one, but I feel proud any time I can help our attorneys piece together the medical elements of a case in a way that supports our clients. Some cases are especially meaningful, and when I can help provide a sense of closure or justice to a patient or their family, it feels incredibly rewarding. Even though I review these cases on paper, the nurse in me still sees them as patients. I just help them in a different way now.

What are your hobbies and interests outside of work?

I’m an avid weightlifter. I lift five days a week and enjoy pushing myself physically. You could say I’m a bit of a gym rat! Outside the gym, I love spending time with my twin sons, one of whom still lives at home. One of them just got engaged, so wedding planning is on the horizon, which should be exciting and keep me busy!

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Don’t waste energy worrying about things you can’t control. If you do your best, that’s all you can ask of yourself. Let go of what you can’t change and trust that your efforts will take you where you’re meant to be.
