In 1978, prosecutors charged Father Gary Berthiaume with sexually abusing two minors in Detroit, Michigan. After he confessed to the abuse, a Wayne County Circuit Court judge sentenced Father Berthiaume to six months in jail. Upon his release, he was assigned to the Cleveland Diocese, where he sexually abused another minor.

In 2022, Father Berthiaume pleaded no contest to sexually abusing young boys and was sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
