In June 2022, a Macomb County jury convicted Father Neil Kalina on two counts of sexually assaulting a teenage male parishioner in the mid-1980s. According to the allegations, Father Kalina supplied the minor with alcohol, cocaine, and marijuana, then sexually fondled him during sleepovers in the church rectory. The judge sentenced Father Kalina to 7-15 years in prison.

Previously, in 1985, Father Kalina was convicted of drug offenses and sentenced to six months in jail and two years of probation. He then moved to California in 1986. In 1993, he began a faith-based program for at-risk young men there.
