A Spring and Summer of Sommers Schwartz Serves
To support the communities where we live and work, Sommers Schwartz Serves is our initiative for giving back. Here’s a rundown of some events and activities we’ve taken part in this past spring and summer.
Making Life a Bit Easier for Seriously Ill Patients
In March 2025, Sommers Schwartz Serves volunteers assembled “chemo kits” for individuals undergoing treatment for cancer and other serious illnesses. The team collected and sorted items, packaged the kits, and wrote handwritten notes of encouragement that the Bettye Harris Foundation, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, distributed to patients and survivors at the Karmanos Cancer Center and other hospitals, charities, and senior centers.

Loving One Another at Easter
Also in March, the Sommers Schwartz Serves committee gathered for another year to assemble and decorate Easter baskets for The Love One Another Foundation (founded by Amanda McCullough, wife of attorney Mickey McCullough). The organization enriches the lives of the underserved in Southeast Michigan by distributing the baskets for the holiday.

Golfing for Kids on the Go!
Kids On The Go! is close to our hearts. This nonprofit provides special needs children with physical, occupational, speech, and recreational therapies during the summer and school year. Sommers Schwartz shareholder Dina Zalewski serves on the board of directors and led the charge to participate in the 10th Annual “Fore the Kids” charity golf outing on May 15, 2025, at Cherry Creek Golf Club.
Supporting U-M’s Little Victors
Sommers Schwartz attorneys took to the links on June 2, 2025, for the 53rd Annual Mott Golf Classic in support of Little Victors. The event raises funds for advancing pediatric medicine and enhancing the care experience for patients and their families at University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. The Mott Golf Classic has supported many initiatives and programs, including Child and Family Life programming, Sophie’s Place, and the Ronald McDonald Mott House.

Stepping Up for March of Dimes
The firm was a proud sponsor of the 44th Annual March of Dimes Golf Classic, held this year on August 4, 2025, at Saint John’s Golf Resort. The event raised $150,000 for March of Dimes‘ mission of leading the fight for the health of all moms and babies. Sommers Schwartz attorneys were among the 27 teams of 135 golfers who enjoyed a spectacular day supporting a great cause.

Getting Out for Cass Community Social Services
Closing out the summer, Sommers Schwartz attorneys teed it up for Cass Community Social Services at its 20th Annual Charity Gold Scramble on September 8, 2025. CCSS delivers critical assistance throughout Metro Detroit, from providing thousands of meals each week to its Tiny Homes Detroit and Green Industries initiatives. Sommers Schwartz shareholder Robert Sickels is a former CCSS board member.

The Sommers Schwartz Serves Committee, led by attorney Alana Karbal and paralegal Lissa Racer, is stewarded by a dedicated group of attorneys and professionals who identify and organize hands-on volunteering activities, fundraising events, and other opportunities for the firm to give back.
