Accused of engaging in sexual misconduct, as stated in the Michigan Attorney General’s report on October 22nd. In a letter addressed to Bishop Noa in 1965, an 18-year-old male disclosed that Hughes had subjected him to repeated sexual abuse, commencing during his time in 5th grade at American Martyrs School and Church in Kingsford, during the late 1950s and 1960s. The victim further revealed that the abuse encompassed acts of sodomy and other deviant behaviors. In 2007, the victim confronted Noa, who dismissively responded by discrediting the allegations, unwilling to accept any criticism against a priest. The diocese, however, acknowledged the credibility of the accusations. Hughes passed away in 1979.
