Class Action Lawsuits Filed Over Michigan Doctor Oumair Aejaz Secretly Recording Unclothed Hospital Patients
Two class action lawsuits have been brought against Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and DMC Sinai Grace, claiming they failed to protect patients from Dr. Oumair Aejaz’s sexual abuse and exploitation.
As we previously reported, Aejaz was arrested after police discovered thousands of recordings of naked women, children, and men taken over a six-year period. According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, the victims of the Rochester Hills, Michigan doctor range from children as young as two to adults.
To date, police have seized six computers, four cell phones, and 16 external hard drives; allegedly, thousands of videos appear on just one storage unit. Aejaz faces ten felony counts and remains in jail on a $2 million bond until his next court appearance in October.
Who Do the Class Actions Target?
Separate from the criminal proceedings, two of Dr. Oumair Aejaz’s alleged victims brought two class actions—one in Wayne County Circuit Court and the other in Oakland County Circuit Court—on behalf of all of his patients he secretly filmed. The lawsuits claim Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and DMC Sinai Grace, two institutions that granted Aejaz staff privileges, had a duty to protect patients from his predatory acts but did not meet that obligation.
Aejaz worked as a contract physician at several Metro Detroit hospitals beginning in 2018. In addition to the two systems named in the lawsuits, Aejaz may have also treated patients at:
- Ascension Genesys Hospital, Grand Blanc
- Corewell Health Hospitals (formerly Beaumont Hospital)
- Providence Hospital, Southfield
- St. Mary Mercy Hospital, Livonia
- Surgeons Choice Medical Center, Southfield
Dr. Aejaz was a hospitalist, and as such, he did not maintain an ongoing relationship with most of his patients. If you are concerned you may have been a patient of Dr. Aejaz but aren’t sure, we encourage you to check your online patient portal and review the medical records and billing statements for his name.
The Time is Now to Speak With an Attorney
Michigan’s statute of limitations restricts the time in which one can file a lawsuit. There is concern that Henry Ford Macomb, DMC Sinai Grace, and any other hospitals that may be later named as defendants will simply wait for the criminal investigation and legal proceedings to end, hoping the statute of limitations will expire during that time. Then, they might move to dismiss any claims filed after the expiration as time-barred.
