The announcement was made on January 22, 2020, by University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel, although details of the accusations were not provided.
The provost is the university’s second-highest-ranking administrator and is in charge of the daily academic operations of the school. Philbert joined the University of Michigan in 1995 as an assistant professor in the School of Public Health. He went on to become dean of the School of Public Health and eventually provost in September 2017.
According to a press release from President Schlissel, the university received the allegations of sexual misconduct on January 16 and 17, 2020. An internal investigation was said to have begun on January 17, with the university bringing in an outside law firm to immediately investigate the allegations. The university’s police department has also initiated its own investigation into the allegations. As of January 23, 2020, no criminal charges have been filed against Philbert.
