$3.5 Million Settlement for Delayed Diagnosis of Intestinal Ischemia

$3.5 Million

Andy Dragovic and Dina Zalewski of Sommers Schwartz, secured a $3.5 million medical malpractice settlement on behalf of a Michigan woman who sustained catastrophic injuries after healthcare providers failed to timely diagnose and treat a blockage in an artery that had stopped blood flow to her small intestine. The delay caused the small intestine to die and led to multiple surgeries, including intestinal transplant.

Over the course of three days, the patient sought emergency medical care multiple times for the same severe abdominal pain, but the failure to get the correct imaging in time led to catastrophic delay in diagnosis and intervention to save her intestine.

By the time surgeons identified the underlying condition, nearly her entire small intestine had sustained irreversible damage. She subsequently underwent multiple surgeries and ultimately required an intestinal transplant. She now faces lifelong medical complications, requires ongoing treatment and medication, and can no longer work.

Sommers Schwartz resolved the matter for $3.5 million.
