- Lumbar Spine: Extending from the mid-abdomen to the low back, the lumbar spine supports most of the body’s weight and encases the section of the spinal cord that corresponds to the back and buttocks.
- Sacral Spine: This area of the spine protects the portion of the spinal cord that communicates with the lower extremities and genitals.
Injury to one section of the spinal cord impacts the corresponding body parts and body parts below the damaged area. Thus, injuries to the cervical spine (near the brain and neck) can cause tetraplegia, or paralysis of the legs, arms, and trunk. Damage to the lower portions of the spine may result in paraplegia or paralysis of the lower extremities.
