Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport Lyft Accident Lawyer
As rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft have gained in popularity, more people rely solely on these apps for transportation to and from the airport. By allowing travelers to easily request and pay for transportation on short notice, rideshare services provide a convenient mode of transportation for passengers at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW).
Although booking a ride with Lyft is generally safe, accidents do occur. This is especially true in chaotic, busy, congested traffic areas like airports. When Lyft drivers are distracted, fatigued, or ignore the rules of the road, serious injuries and even death can occur.
In a Lyft accident, passenger(s) may suffer injuries that require immediate medical care. Depending on the circumstances, the Lyft driver or the company — or both — may be held accountable for the crash and any resulting damages.
If you were injured in a Lyft crash at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, call Sommers Schwartz at (800) 783-0989 today for a free consultation with an experienced Michigan personal injury attorney.
Rideshare Laws in Michigan
Under Michigan’s Limousine, Taxicab, and Transportation Network Company Act, Lyft is considered a transportation network company (TNC). It operates to connect individual riders to drivers who provide prearranged rides in a TNC-regulated vehicle.
Lyft must also register with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to operate in the state. The Act outlines the following requirements with which rideshare services must comply. Lyft and other rideshare companies must:
- Conduct annual criminal background checks and driving records of employees and Applicants.
- Conduct annual inspections of vehicles five years old or older by a licensed mechanic.
- Prohibit the use of drugs or alcohol while operating a vehicle to provide rides for passengers.
- Require drivers to carry the required amount of vehicle insurance coverage.
Where to Find Lyft Drivers at the Airport
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport opened in 1930 in Romulus, Michigan, as the Wayne County Airport. DTW has designated drop-off and pick-up locations for rideshare companies. Lyft rideshare zones can be found at the Big Blue Deck, Level 1, or McNamara Parking Garage, Level 4. Although Lyft drivers must use the designated locations for rideshare pick-ups and drop-offs, accidents can still occur in or outside the designated areas
Lyft Accidents at the Wayne County Airport
With over 35 million passengers arriving and departing from DTW every year, it’s no surprise that airport traffic can be extremely congested. If a Lyft driver causes an accident at DTW, they must immediately stop the vehicle, give aid to anyone injured, and provide their contact and insurance information to the police and other parties involved.
If a Lyft driver hit your vehicle or you were a passenger in a Lyft rideshare and suffered injuries, you have the right to seek compensation for your damages.
Special Damages
Special damages are financial losses with specific dollar values that one can easily calculate. They are out-of-pocket costs and other financial losses incurred by the injured party due to the personal injury. Special damages, also known as economic damages, include:
- Past and future lost wages.
- Medical expenses.
- Repair costs.
- Property damage.
General Damages
General damages do not have exact or easily calculable dollar amounts. These are non-economic damages that involve the physical, mental, and emotional implications of the accident, such as:
- Pain and suffering.
- Loss of consortium.
- Loss of enjoyment of life.
- Mental anguish.
- Disfigurement.
- Emotional distress.
Lyft’s Insurance Policy
A victim of a car accident caused by a Lyft driver can file a claim against the company’s insurance policy. If the driver is found liable for the accident, the compensation is paid up to Lyft’s policy limits.
Michigan law sets the minimum liability insurance Lyft drivers must have while operating in Michigan. As of 2025, the minimum coverage limits for drivers are:
- At least $50,000 per person.
- $100,000 per incident.
- $25,000 for property damage.
Higher limits apply when the Lyft driver is involved in an accident with a passenger in the vehicle.
