Car accident victims frequently experience whiplash immediately after the collision, which occurs when the head suddenly jerks backward and forward. The abrupt motion can injure the spine, discs between vertebrae, muscles, nerves, and tissues in the neck. Depending on the severity of the damage, victims may experience headaches, nerve pain, memory problems, sleep disturbances, and general irritability.
In serious car accidents, the force from the collision may cause one or more of the victim’s vertebrae to fracture or break. This type of traumatic injury can lead to excessive pressure on the spinal cord, resulting in permanent damage. Because spine injuries affect surrounding areas of the body and associated bodily functions, an accident victim may suffer permanent paralysis of the upper and lower extremities.
Car accidents can also damage the discs between the vertebrae. A ruptured or herniated disc can produce severe pain, tingling, and weakness throughout the lower body. Some disc injuries heal on their own, but many require surgery.
